When you’re managing GERD and kidney concerns, comforting breakfast foods and desserts can seem like something you’ll never be able to enjoy again.
We’ve been trying recipes from different kidney-friendly websites , on the hunt, in search of meals that are both comforting and gentle on the digestive system. These Dutch apple pancakes were a great comfort food recipe option. We really enjoyed them.
They were soft, lightly sweet, and were easy to digest.

The Image above shows how our recipe came out. Not too bad, considering all of the the GERD friendly modifications that were made. I also didn’t have a round cast iron skillet on hand, just yet.
Here is the link to the original recipe I discovered on a renal-diet website, rsnhope.org. Below the link, you will find the modifications made to adapt the recipe for a more GERD-friendly experience.

🔧 Our GERD-Friendly Modifications
Here are the changes made:
| Original Ingredient | What we Changed |
|---|---|
| Butter-heavy topping | Used only 1 tablespoon of butter instead of two- could use olive oil instead |
| 3 whole eggs | Used 1 whole egg and two egg whites instead |
| Cinnamon-seasoning 1 tablespoon | Did not add extra cinnamon |
| Whole milk | Used rice milk (UN-enriched) – |
| 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest | skipped the lemon zest |
| 6 tablespoons of sugar and 3 granny smith apples | we used one Can of apple pie filling to save time. The canned filling did have 19 grams of sugar- however, 6 tablespoons of sugar in the original recipe -equals a whopping 75 grams of sugar. |
⚠️ Kidney-Friendly Notes
This recipe was already fairly kidney-conscious, but portion size still matters depending on your dietary needs.
Things I kept in mind:
- Watched sodium levels
- Controlled portion size
🥞 Texture & Taste Review
The texture was somewhere between a pancake and a soft baked crepe.
To save time, we did use one can of apple pie filling instead of fresh apples. I did not add any additional sugar. The flavor felt warm and comforting without being overwhelming. I especially liked that this recipe felt comforting and reminiscent of apple pie or pastry.
We used ONE Can of Lucky Leaf apple pie filling
Disclosure: as an amazon associate we earn from qualifying purchases
The Lucky Leaf Pie filling features a pleasant blend of nutmeg and cinnamon, which we found to be mild. However, for those who are sensitive to spices or experiencing a GERD flare-up, it may be advisable to prepare your own apple filling or seek out a pie filling that is free from cinnamon and other spices.
This would be a great:
- Weekend breakfast that can be shared with family member’s or friends not suffering from Kidney disease or GERD. Can be enjoyed by all.
- Comfort Snack
- Simple dessert
